Poll: how will we do against New York?

New York

Paddy Power have us priced at a nice, generous 1/500 to do the business against New York over in Gaelic Park this coming Sunday (throw-in 2.30pm local time, 7.30pm here) in our opening match of this year’s Championship campaign. In this week’s Mayo News (digital edition), James Horan has told Mike Finnerty that they intend to hit the Yanks with everything they have on Sunday and will be taking every fit member of the panel over for the match. By the sounds of that, James has no intention of seeing his side skirt with disaster in the way they did in his first championship match in charge, against London over in Ruislip in 2011.

By the way, this week’s Mayo News is well worth getting either in digital or paper form as it contains a special supplement on the New York game, the cover of which is quite an artistic delight.

Right, then, how do you think the match will go – easy win, not-so-easy win or – Heaven forbid – a mortifying, never-to-be-lived-down defeat? Time to vote, y’all.

How will the New York game go?

  1. Mayomaningalway says:

No option on the vote for a loss WJ ? :)

  2. Willie Joe says:

There is – that’s the ‘shock of the century’ one (currently attracting 9% of the vote for some odd reason).

  3. Mister Mayor says:

I think if mayo were to lose this one, it would surely make the nighty news here, such would be the shock!

  4. Mayomaningalway says:

oh yes i didnt read that properly . who are the 9% ? :)

  5. Dan says:

I think some Rossies must be infiltrating the site…

  6. Pete says:

JH has stated he wants every fit member of panel and wants to throw everything at them. This will show exactly where we are at I think. He stated before the league he wanted to win it and we know what happened there. If we don’t smash NY then we’re done for this year I think.

  7. HopeSpringsEternal says:

I wonder when is the team due to be named?

  8. mayo.mick says:

Not too sure if there’re training tonight. Team named probably tomorrow night? There’re heading over on Thursday.

  9. HopeSpringsEternal says:

Thanks mayo.mick, yeah with it being a championship match, I was thinking that it would be a bit earlier than the usual midnight on Friday night, as it was for some of the league games.

  10. Mayomaningalway says:

will the game be on Midwest does anyone know?

  11. 45 says:

Yes – Mid West will have live coverage of the game :-D

  12. My ball says:

Win well and hope we don’t pick up any injuries and give all subs a run out.

  13. justoutsideballagh says:

Its a nothing match, hopefully some bonding but like playing a Club Team. Lets just get on with it and focus on the Rossies in The Hyde.

  14. mayo.mick says:

Mayomaningalway, Will be a live broadcast on Mid West. RTE will also be showing highlights from 7.30, they requested that the match be brought forward to 2.30 to show them.

  15. Nephin says:

    Hi Pete,
I know what you’re saying, but as far as I can recall, James was answering a question about what he wanted from the league. He said his aim was to win it and he couldn’t have said anything else, or he would have been ate alive .What he really wanted, only he and the close group knew and rightly so.
I might be wrong, but I don’t think for one second that he wanted to win it.
We had Dublin beaten three times in our last meeting and loose to that Derry team in the semi, it just doesn’t add up.
I still expect a great summer.

  16. David says:

Was chatting to a lad involved with a ny club containing a couple of ny players, he reckons the ny lads are alright of players but light years away from Mayos level of fitness and conditioning, we all know that, but still, Mayo need to not get any broken legs or arms and get a victory all the same.

    Mayo 3 18

  17. Mac's left boot says:

If you could borrow a million for 24 hours on Sunday you’d make a handy €2000 at paddy power

  18. Berry says:

He should have wanted to to win the league. In my humble opinion building a winning mentality is just as important as going crazy in the gym building muscles. Mayo should be
chomping at the bit to get the chance to put it up to the Dubs at every available opportunity.

If he was really sacrificing the second national competition due to some longerterm plan for later in the year then he is one cool man.

  19. JPM says:

I think he did want to win it. Real effort went into beating the Dubs in Croke Park. And I think as much as the players had (at the time) went into winning against Derry in Castlebar. But they were too tired after the 3 hard games on the trot, (also possibly whatever training they’re at) and Derry as well had 14 fresh men to bring in for the semi-final.

The exhaustion and tiredness was evident in the final 5 minutes when Derry pulled away. The worry for us I think is that the sideline impact was notably poor (for both Dublin and Mayo games). Also both of those games were against 14 men but we were unable to win either. It is a confidence blow for the team and another reason that nationally we are seen as chokers and probably a softer touch come the business end of the season because of this perceived fragility.

On the flip side we were probably better off getting beaten by Derry as it was clearly evident in the way that Dublin destroyed Derry that they would have beaten us handily as well in any final. And this would have put the heads in a bad place before the start of the championship and the NY match.

  20. Steve says:

What odds are NY to beat us? If the shock of the century was pulled off at least it would pay for the entire trip over.

  21. Willie Joe says:

Paddy Power have priced New York at 16/1 to beat us, which is a bit mean of them given our 1/500 odds for the game!

  22. Steve says:

Crap odds alright Willie Joe, 500/1 would be too good to resist a tenner.

  23. Liam jones says:

I met a bloke yesterday who told me he had a pain in the hole from supporting mayo. The pain is so great he said that at times it feels like he has 3 or 4 holes

  24. Trevor Naughton says:

    Robbie Hennelly 1st goalscorer lads….. guaranteed ;-)

  26. HopeSpringsEternal says:

Interesting story on the RTE website:

Mark McHugh among three players to quit Donegal panel

You’d wonder what’s going on there.

  27. pjmcmanus says:

Is there a prediction competition set up anytime soon for the championship

  28. F'Deelin says:

With our porous defence so far it better not be an own goal Hennelly scores!

  29. mayo.mick says:

pj, face the ball do the championship prediction league. I’ve been keeping an eye out myself, nothing happening yet. Cant remember if they start after New York match.

  31. Fourgoal McGee says:

“@MayoGAA: Team: Hennelly, Cunniffe, Keane, Higgins, Keegan, Boyle, Vaughan, Gibbons, AOShea, D.OConnor, SOShea, Doherty, McLoughlin, Moran, C.O’Connor”

  32. Fourgoal McGee says:

I like the look of that team.

  33. lost in cork says:

good team i like the look of it the back’s looks stronger than we had for most of the league , nice to see keith back , boyle at center half will be interesting, the forward section is interesting , it would be nice to have McLoughlin in the half forwards tho maybe moving jason doherty in to the full forward line

  34. Ciaran says:

^^^ Boyle may wear 7 but is generally always operating in the centre

Doherty has been superb HF and McL has a new lease of life wearing 13 and having more freedom.

Great team, O’Connor the only questionable inclusion. Delighted to see the 3 mids starting, Gibbons will probably play more CF than any

    Higgins back is great news

Saying all that the under 16′s would win this :p :D

  35. BL says:

Where’s a good Mayo pub in NY to watch the match on Sunday?

  36. catcol says:

    Hmm, no Freezer. Interesting.

Feel that Diarmaid O’Connor is JH’s type of player. He did look able for the physicality of it all on his fleeting appearances in the league.

Would like to see the subs list.

  37. Ciaran says:

^^^ Me too, I don’t think they release it do they? Till the match itself, on the programme

  38. mayo.mick says:

I’d say we’ll know the subs tomorrow by the crew that’s travelling!

  39. Patrick O Boyle says:

Well the Mayo team has been named and the positive news is that Keith Higgins is back at corner back which is without doubt his best position. Our attack is questionable and some strange selections. Alan Freeman should be at full forward, unless he is injured. The man named at number 14 is certainly not the player he was and played poor in the league. Im baffled about the exclusion of Mickey Sweeney, he was probably one of Mayo’s best player in the league. Centre half forward has been a problem area for us and it will be interesting to see how Seamus O Shea gets on there on sunday. The inclusion of Diarmuid O Connor in the half forward line is surprising, he probably will switch positions with Kevin Mc Loughlin

  40. Ciaran says:

    Ha, good point Mayo Mick!
