The county’s footballers may currently be occupying one of the two relegation places in Division One of this year’s NFL (table here) but the hurlers are riding high, out clear in front in the NHL Division 2B. Four games, four wins and they’ve already booked their place in the Division 2B final.
Last weekend the hurlers came with a late surge to claim the points against Derry at Celtic Park. Today’s win – a 1-22 to 2-16 victory over Wicklow at James Stephens Park in Ballina – was another cracking comeback one. Kenny Feeney led the charge in the scoring stakes today, bagging ten points, nine from frees.
This latest victory, combined with Down’s unexpected defeat this afternoon to Donegal at Letterkenny, puts Derek Walsh’s charges two points clear of Down at the top of the table (details here) and with a guaranteed place in the divisional final. The Mournesiders need to stop our lads’ unbeaten run next Sunday if they’re to be sure of booking the other final spot, with Wicklow and Donegal (both on four points) lurking in the wings should they fail to do so.
Colm Gannon of the Mayo Advertiser was at James Stephens Park this afternoon to catch the action. His match report is here.
Well done to the hurlers on another super win today.
