Another glut of club championship action is set to take place within the county this coming weekend. The final round of group matches are down for decision in both the Senior and Intermediate club championships and there’s plenty on the line in a number of these games.
Let’s start with the Moclair Cup fixtures. Five clubs – Ballaghaderreen, Castlebar Mitchels, Claremorris, Garrymore and Westport – are all through already to the knockout stages but all of them will still want to win their final matches this weekend and so top their respective groups.
Five more clubs – Aghamore, Ballina Stephenites, Crossmolina, Davitts and Hollymount/Carramore – are already out of the running for the Moclair Cup. All of them will, though, be seeking wins that could ensure they avoid getting sucked into a relegation battle.
In Group 1, the top-of-the-table clash between Castlebar Mitchels and Ballaghaderreen takes place at Fr O’Hara Park, Charlestown, on Saturday evening (throw-in 6pm). Aghamore face Ballina in the other match in this group, with that one throwing in at Foxford on Sunday at 4pm.
In Group 2, Charlestown – needing a win to qualify – face Moy Davitts at Gilmartin Park, Kiltimagh, at 1pm on Sunday. I’m planning to get to that one. The other Group 2 match throws in at the same time that afternoon, featuring Garrymore and Knockmore at MacHale Park.
In Group 3, Claremorris and Westport meet on Sunday to decide who tops the group. That one throws in at Flanagan Park in Ballinrobe at 2pm. Later that afternoon, Hollymount/Carramore and Crossmolina lock horns at Islandeady (throw-in 5pm).
In Group 4, Breaffy – looking for a win to top the group – face Davitts in Claremorris, while Kiltane take on Ballintubber at MacHale Park (part of a double-header, which I’m also attending this weekend). Both of those ties get underway at 5.30pm on Saturday.
Redcol provided a super preview of these games here on the site the other day (that’s here) so there’s no need for me to re-plough that particular furrow. Colm Gannon in the Mayo Advertiser also has a preview piece on the weekend’s SFC action – here.
Onto the Intermediate championship where there are also plenty of do-or-die issues to be resolved this weekend. Here’s the full list:
- Group 1 (Saturday, 5pm): Ballyhaunis v Mayo Gaels at Ballindine, Kiltimagh v Belmullet at Ballina
- Group 2 (Sunday, 2pm): Islandeady v Bonniconlon at Ballina, Swinford v Burrishoole at Parke
- Group 3 (Saturday, 4pm): Castlebar Mitchels B v Ballinrobe at Ballintubber, The Neale v Ardnaree at MacHale Park
- Group 4 (Sunday, 2.30pm) Shrule/Glencorrib v Parke/Keelogues/Crimlin at MacHale Park, Louisburgh v Lahardane at Breaffy.
Colm Gannon also has a preview of these games in the Mayo Advertiser – here.

The Mayo News football podcast will, by the way, be on the road this weekend covering all the action. Rob, Mike, Ger, Ed and I will be bringing you samples of the various games from around the county and the podcast will also feature a roundtable discussion analysing the outcome of the group stages in both the SFC and the IFC. This new episode of the podcast will be online next Tuesday morning so stay tuned for that.
Finally, you’ll no doubt be interested to learn that the Ted Webb finals are on this evening at the Connacht Centre of Excellence, full details here. The Shield final, between Mayo EW and Galway N, throws in at 7pm and the Cup final, in which Mayo NS face Galway CW, gets going at 8.15pm. Don’t fret if you can’t make it to Bekan in person this evening, as both finals are being streamed live via YouTube – link for that is here.
