This is just a quick reminder for those who fancy seeing a bit of football action this weekend. If you do, there are a few Connacht club games on that might be of interest.
Starting tomorrow, Kilmaine take on Glenamaddy in the Connacht JFC quarter-final, with that game throwing in at Tuam Stadium at 2pm. Kilmaine didn’t, of course, win the Junior title in Mayo but, as it was Castlebar Mictchels’ B team that beat them in the decider, it was the border lads who got the right to compete for provincial honours at this level.
On Sunday, Ballintubber take the field in the Connacht SFC. The field in question is the familair surroundings of MacHale Park where they’ll be up against Leitrim champions Glencar/Manorhamilton. Throw-in is 2pm.
Also on Sunday, Tooreen are back in action in the Connacht IHC. It’s back to Athleague for them too for their semi-final clash against Robert Emmets of London. That game throws in at the earlier time of 1pm.
Another match well within driving range for many people and which might pique a fair bit of interest is Sunday’s replay of the Galway SFC final. Tuam Stars almost did for Corofin the Sunday before last, with the All-Ireland champions needing to come from two points down in injury time to grab what many thought was an undeserved draw.
The replay takes place at Tuam Stadium on Sunday at 2pm and, like the drawn match, it’s sure to draw a bumper crowd. The Galway champions are scheduled to meet the winners of the Ballintubber v Glencar/Manorhamilton tie in the Connacht semi-final.
Finally, the best of luck to the four Mayo players who are in the hunt for All-Star awards tonight. The 2019 football team will be revealed this evening, with coverage starting on RTÉ One at 7pm.
